Separates are great. Just great. That perfect cashmere jumper that will work just as well with denim as it will over a silky slip dress is worth the investment in my book.
So too are the ultimate black trousers – worn with heels and a classic white shirt for the office, or with plimsolls and a grey sweatshirt for weekend wear.
You can’t go wrong with a winning sartorial investment that will see you reap the rewards in price per wear. In short, the older I get, the more I can see that paying a little more for something I’ll wear a lot is really a no-brainer.
But what you really want are separates that up the ante – that will make you feel amazing whenever and wherever you choose to wear them. For this reason, I say – go luxe my friend, go luxe! Wool mix, cashmere, silks and leathers will all last for years if you look after them – plus they will add an edge to every outfit, be it for a play-date or a work meeting.
The separates I’m wearing here are both from Jaeger, which has had a bit of a style injection of late.
For a few years it’s hung around in middle age territory, not really knowing to whom it was trying to appeal. But now the age lines have blurred on the high street, with everyone shopping – quite rightly – anywhere they like. And they are definitely upping the ante on separates.
This cream jumper feels amazing on – and I love the slightly too long sleeves and neckline that wants to go into a cowl-neck, but which can be teased into a bit of a sassier off the shoulder number. And the leather skirt – which yes, is an investment piece – is the perfect cross between a pencil and an a-line. In a wrap shape, but a buttery soft leather, it’s perfect for curvier hips like mine and you could easily wear it to work or on a night out. I love.
The bag is called the ‘Haworth,’ the new across the body design from Village England. It has a bit of a rock n’ roll vibe with the chain link strap. And I customised it with those new Topshop stickers.
