My Style: The statement party skirt for when a dress just won’t do

Skirt, Finery | Navy cashmere men’s jumper, Marks & Spencer | Heels, Jigsaw | Leopard clutch bag, Boden (out of stock, try this one) | Khaki coat (below), ASOS White (out of stock, similar here)

I can’t remember the last time I got REALLY dressed up. A black tie, ball gown, fancy clutch bag, high heels, chandelier earrings kind of an outfit.

The truth is, I don’t actually dress like that any more. Even if it was a black tie, I probably wouldn’t go full-on frock. On a night out, I want to look nice – obviously, but I want to be comfortable and more importantly, look like me.

To be brutally honest, I’m good in heels for max an hour (maybe two) these days. And that’s getting an Ûber there and back. With a pair of flats in my bag.

For me, a great evening look right now begins and ends with separates; great trousers, a brilliant top or a statement skirt. Even better when the skirt can be teamed with a favourite knit and the hour-long heels.

I spotted this one online at Finery and it was love at first sight. The perfect shape and length for me, with a bit of pleating loveliness. But that colour!

I wore it with my wardrobe staple, a navy blue crew neck, plus heels from Jigsaw and my favourite dress coat from ASOS.

Little style tip: when it comes to punchy colour pop separates like this one, don’t play safe and stick to black.

This bold chartreuse shade looks brilliant mixed with blue, grey and khaki (like my coat). The leopard clutch breaks up the colour blocking with a bit of my favourite print.

There are lots of other brilliant jewel coloured skirts on the high street at the moment, check out my edit below. (One that’s quite similar to mine is this gorgeous one from Jigsaw and I also love this, from & Other Stories.

They’re the kind of purchase you’ll get plenty of wear from, way beyond party season.
