It’s the summer holidays which means heading off somewhere lovely – but which can also mean long days trying to keep the small ones entertained.
I am a big believer in not planning things to do for every minute of the day, every day of the week. And anyway, you can end up spending a small fortune (and eat rubbish food) on ‘exciting’ days out that leave everyone frazzled.
So sue me, but I think it’s OK for them to SOMETIMES be a bit bored. I read it somewhere and I totally agree with the sentiment. I can remember growing up having long, boring afternoons with nothing to do, but I used my imagination and went and did something, or created, or coloured.
Sunny days can be sorted with play dates, a cheap paddling pool and tupperware boxes. But it’s the rainy days you worry about – after all, there’s only so much CBeebies will help with.
So I have taken some inspiration from Pinterest and come up with five crafty activities that’ll entertain them during the make – and the playing time afterwards.
PS Pinterest UK interviewed me for their blog, check it out here.
1: INDOOR HOPSCOTCH MADE WITH DUCT TAPE (could also try Washi tape)

2: MAKING A CARDBOARD CAMERA

3: BUILDING A DEN OUT OF AN XXL LAUNDRY BAG

4: BUILDING A CARDBOARD DOLLS HOUSE

This was uploaded onto Pinterest without instructions, but lots of great how to do ideas here
5: DIY SAILBOAT IN A JAR

I agree with you on kids needing to be a bit bored. Yesterday we had rain and hubby was away. But as I’m laid up with my back, I couldn’t do anything exciting with the kids or take them out. Once TV time was up, they bickered for a while but then it went quiet….never a good thing, surely?! But no, they’d raided their craft cupboard & found an unopened ‘paint a canvas’ set, laid out newspapers and started working on it!
I’ve also found Lego competitions great – they all have to build a structure within a certain time (set the oven timer for as long as you ‘need’!) – they love it 🙂
Thanks for all your ideas – loving the indoor hopscotch – so simple X
