Luxury online boutique Cocobaci is a lovely new find. Specialising in clothing and gifts for babies and toddlers aged 0-2 years, the Italian translation is ‘chocolate kisses’ – cute!
Launched last month by former fashion buyers and merchandisers Antonella Bettley, Linda Alexander and Sarah Edwards, Cocobaci is their stylish edit of some of the loveliest clothing brands and gifts on the market.
Antonella worked at a senior level at Peacocks until last year, when it unfortunately went into administration. While there, she came up with various style initiatives including their highly acclaimed Pearl Lowe collection and a Fashion Editor’s Range with, erm, me!
Now Anton lives in the Midlands with husband Tim – who has just launched the Nutmeg childrenswear range for Morrisons – and their daughter Martha, 4.
Here MMM chats to Antonella about the launch of their new site and read on to find my top picks:
What was the inspiration behind Cocobaci? I have been in clothing retail for over 20 years! I absolutely adore fashion, trend and interiors and I have spent many years travelling to wonderful places and couldn’t resist buying up lovely things along the way, both for myself, my home and my loved ones. Following the birth of our daughter, Martha I found a new love – gorgeous baby clothing and little treasures for the nursery & home. At the time all my friends were having babies too and buying just the right gift was really tough! Finding the perfect collection under one roof was near on impossible and to get what you wanted you had to cherry pick the best from all different stores and sites which was so frustrating and time consuming. In 2012 I teamed up with two of my best friends and former colleagues and we created Cocobaci, our own personal edit of some of the yummiest little clothing brands and gorgeous hand-made gifts from local craftsmen.
How has your background in fashion inspired you? The world of fashion and retail has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Travelling the world, developing ranges, sourcing products and negotiating on behalf of big companies comes as second nature to me. When starting to brainstorm the business idea I couldn’t imagine my life without trend and product development. I love meeting local businesses & finding new concepts which is done through endless research. Scouring the internet and flea markets is also a great source of inspiration. I also love being part of such a close knit team who also happen to be wonderful friends. We all share the same vision which is to create an effortless online shopping experience that provides our customers with a hand- picked range full of gorgeous gifts for new babies.
How have you found your brands? Our love of clothing made it difficult to narrow down our selection and we all had favourite brands that we loved from when our girls, nieces & nephews were babies but we managed it in the end. Looking at the competition and attending trade fairs such as bubble was a great starting point but you can’t beat jumping in your car and going to see the brands either at their showrooms or even visiting them at their factories. You instantly get a sense of what they stand for and if they were a true fit for Coco. It’s really tough, the research is endless and you can see possibilities with everything. Turning old sweaters into teddies or designing little leather shoes that coordinate back with sleepsuits for that added touch! Quality was paramount but we also wanted to offer pieces with added flair but not too quirky as a lot of our purchases are gifts. There are so many wonderful brands out there but offering true choice and something a little different was quite tough. We opted for a mix of well known and trusted brands such as, ilovegorgeous, Tommy Hilfiger and Nature’s Purest and then tried some new and innovative brands such as Magnificent Baby, Mathilda’s Wardrobe and Flatout Bear. Our makers are all hand picked and we found them through recommendations and friends. We work closely with them to develop individual pieces and pride ourselves on the exclusivity they give Coco. It’s really special to be able to create something bespoke, unique and a gift that will be treasured forever.
