MMM: Red lip = perfect hangover cure
Read something last week which I thought was brilliant. Alexa Chung only ever wears red lipstick to disguise the fact she’s absolutely knackered.
Speaking to Elle she says, ‘A secret I’ve learned from Alexa Chung is to wear red lipstick if you’re feeling tired.
‘The idea is that people look at your lips and not your eyes. I laugh when I see pictures of Alexa wearing red lipstick because I think ‘Ha, someone had a late night’.
Now we are officially into party season, what better way to cure that hangover than a pint of water, a sausage roll and tube of Mac’s Ruby Woo?
Or indeed, if you’re up all night with a teething child (hello!), technically a red lip will detract from the eye bags.
I am not high-maintenance / patient enough to reapply a red lipstick all day and usually stick to gloss.
But I love the look, seen here on Rihanna, Rita Ora, Myleene (that pout!) and Gwen, natch. Even Gwyneth once said, “Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.”
Here are her official findings for the perfect ruby lip.
Louise says: “I’m obsessed with the search for the perfect red lipstick, there’s something so grown up, so sophisticated and so … simple about wearing the perfect red shade that makes all other lipstick colours simply pale in comparison. I always refer to it as an instant facelift! Over the years, I’ve flirted with many reds, but here are my picks of the ones out currently:
- Art Deco Dita Von Teese Collection – Shade 620 “Parlez-Vous” I normally don’t care for celebrity ranges at all, but this velvety-matte lipstick is the perfect blend of pigment and lasting power, that is exceptionally difficult to beat. When it comes to red lipstick, Miss Teese definitely knows what’s what. You can find them in Debenhams for around £14.50.
- For a lipstick that makes a statement, every woman needs a lipstick from Tom Ford, his private blend collection of lipsticks blend luxe looks and great ingredients for a real impact. Cherry Lush is a bright and pretty red that suits almost every skintone. At £36 a pop though, might be best to ask Santa for this one! Available from Selfridges.
- But, if your budget runs more to Superdrug than Selfridges, the new range of matte lipsticks from Rimmel’s Kate Moss range are hard to beat, really! Shade 107, a deep berry colour is a real stunner at a bargain price. It’s a great formula, and can be blotted down to make an exceptionally pretty stain. Available from Boots & Superdrug.
“As for why red lipstick is simple, well, the best way to wear it is just with a great base, and a dab of eyeliner, it’s the quickest way to perk up your look with the least effort around!”
